Amen Caroline! Praise God for faithful people like yourself. God will reward your faithfulness. "A faithful man (person) will abound with blessings" (Proverbs 28:20 NASB).

I am not surprised at the kind of responses this article has elicited. for i too at one point used to be a strong anti-tither. it is not any pastor who asks people to tithe. it is the instruction in the word of God. unless we have stopped believing the word- Malachi 3:10 says clearly, and i quote; "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it." ______yet even with the writing in black and white, we still have the guts to throw stones at those who try to elaborate on this. we contract ourselves when we hurry to pick other verses such as Jer 29: 11, or Luke 1:35 and steadfastly hold onto them without questioning. but since this particular verse is about giving, we seem to take offence. i had all these arguments some of you have supporting my position. but not anymore, and i thank God that i now know the truth. i dint change my position because any pastor had convinced me. No, i just read the tithing scripture and made a decision to change based on that. i appreciate though that there are some pastors who take advantage of this scripture and plunder finances raised through tithing. when i realised this is the case, i decided to give to the church where i get my spiritual nourishment. i dont care what they do with the finances. they'll face the wrath of God. what matters to me is that i have done my part. if they dont follow the instructions, thats their bit to deal with. God knows. otherwise tithing has greatly changed my life. whenever i have trusted God completely and given despite financial pressures, He has done exactly what He says in Malachi. He has flung open the doors of finances to me and fully provided for my needs. i know tithing shd be done secretly but i am jus saddened when it is misunderstood by those against it. do it from ur heart. its an instruction from God. re-read Malachi.

Jack I love what you wrote "No one here is saying that tithing is a strict, 10% Biblical doctrine or law or teaching. It is a principle that we give back a portion that God has blessed us...."
The problem is the word principle having more than one meaning; causes a problem.

1. A fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning.
2. A rule or belief governing one's personal behavior.

#1 above I like, but #2 says rule. Depending on whether a person sees it as a RULE instead of a proposition that serves as a foundation..., puts it as a law or doctrine.

Tithing would serve the body of Christ greatly if it were taught as you put it throughout the nation. SImply put, it is a great foundation to help serve the needs of the church (the people, the poor) and most importantly the good news moving forward. I call it offerings, because it should not be done out of compulsion and when a certain number is tied to it, it is then under compulsion for most.

I believe Kris' issue is of those who preach condemnation and even a curse, if one doesn't give a tithe as if it is a LAW of 10% under the new covenant.

Controversy shall follow teaching of God's word, especially if it involves people's precious dollars. When I tithe, I prepare it in advance, fold it into my wallet, and when I give it... I believe God for His Word, not Dow Jones or National Bank of______. After all, it's His Word, not mine. If anyone has a problem with it, take it up with Him...He wrote it. Amen? In Matthew 22:37, Jesus(note red letters) says: "LOVE the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your MIND." Are you loving Him when you pray? Are you loving Him when you Praise? Are you loving Him when you give? The results will be remarkable.

I was abused as a child and later in my marriage. I'm now divorced. What came out of the mess of my life was Ministry for hurting women hurting women and abused children. Everywhere I was like the story of the Piped Piper, hurting women approached me in Grocery stores,Supermarkets, Parks etc. God gave me many spiritual daughters in the Lord. My goal is to open a safe shelter for homeless, abused women & children. Not trying to boast but in one year I had about ten women coming to my Church. Half asked for help, one in particular had been beaten by her husband and staying in a temporary shelter. She asked my Church to help her and got a long lecture on not tithing. They blamed all of her troubles on the fact that God was with-holding his blessings because she was not a tither. I had not talked to her in a while after she she went into the shelter & I didn't know what was going on. She wrote a letter telling the Pastor I bought her to Church but she would never come back because she was given the third degree (raked over the mill) for not tithing. The Pastor over the Pulpit said we should not expect the Church to help people not paying their tithes and that many of them are professional takers. Later he was forced to resign for having a 2yr. adulterous affair. Just goes to show there is none righteous, no not one. Our righteousness surely comes from our position in Christ alone!

They keeps the Sabbath Holy but there are 612 more to go (with a total of 613 Mosaic laws) Jews had to keep them all or it voided the whole Covenant. To reaffirm the Covenant a perfect lamb was slain for the remission of sins and breaking God's moral laws. Ask any Devout Jew and they will confirm there were 613 laws, or google it if you want proof.

My mother in law is Seven Day Adventist and is also a born again believer. She thinks Christians are disobeying the ten commandments and could land up in Hell because of not keeping the Sabbath Day Holy. (set apart). For Devout Seven Day Adventist, everything stops on Friday as soon as the Sun sets she does nothing but read her bible or rest till Saturday at dusk. To her credit when my car broke down in a bad neighborhood she came to pick me up. I was shocked but apparently, it is alright for her to do good on the Sabbath.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Gal. 4:30 the Apostle Paul was using an allegory and typology. Galatians deals with Paul's rebuke of Judaizers. Here is the definition I got when I goggled up Judaizers:
"It is a term which refers to non-Jews and especially certain Christians, such as Jewish Christians, Quartodecimans, Ethiopian Christians, Seventh-Day Adventists and others, who claim the necessity of obedience to the Mosaic Laws which are found in the first five books of the Christian Old Testament.[1] Mainstream Christians generally consider obedience to the Mosaic Laws as applicable only to Jews. Similarly, "one who has Judaized" refers to a Christian who has accepted the necessity of adhering to the Mosaic Laws or to specific laws that are believed to be superseded, such as circumcision or sabbath observance. The ongoing Christian debate over Judaizing in Christianity or Biblical law in Christianity began in the lifetime of the apostles, notably at the Council of Jerusalem, and parallels the ongoing debate about Paul of Tarsus and Judaism and the Protestant views of the Ten Commandments".

Just wondered if Jack & Gary or Kim can explain Galatians 4:30 But what does the Scripture say? "Drive out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman must never share the inheritance with the son of the free woman. I thought it was a reference to Old Covenant (law) Versus our New Covenant of Grace. Bible Commentary seems to lean my way but what say you Gary and Jack? I am open to learn the proper interpretation.
